Conclusion & Affirmation

Returning to school after a decade away from higher education has been a memorable experience. I have learned a great deal about library and information theory, metadata and descriptive cataloging, and the history of books and libraries. Some of my most rewarding school experiences have been the two internships I participated in: one providing remote reference services with the San Francisco Public Library Jail and Reentry Services, and one performing archival work with the San Francisco History Center.

The program has also taught me a great deal about making digital presentations, including slideshows, infographics, and podcasts. Prior to my time at school, I had made few professional presentations, if any, and I did not have any confidence in my ability to make a presentation on any topic. I white-knuckled my way through my first presentation, a Zoom recording for INFO 203. Three years later, I am happy to say that the innumerable presentations that I have made for this program has have cured me of my fear.

Strengths
My professional strengths include my curiosity, my communication and writing skills, and my customer service experience. My natural curiosity has been helpful in my current work at the San Francisco Public Library. Patrons approach the desk to ask myriad diverse questions. Often, my lifelong quest for information has provided a helpful starting point for assisting others in their research.

I first learned communication and writing skills through my love of reading, and then honed my abilities by studying English literature at UC Berkeley and through professional opportunities. This skill has been useful in school, and I look forward to using it in my future career as a librarian.

Library and information science is a second career for me. Before working at the San Francisco Public Library and attending the School of Information, I spent fifteen years working in the hospitality industry. My time as a restaurant server and manager trained me to be provide stellar service to each and every person I attend to. I am adept at reading nonverbal communication and asking clarifying questions to understand others' needs.

Personal Growth Plan
The past three years have taught me a great deal. First and foremost, they have taught me how much there is to know as a librarian. Although I have ostensibly completed my education, I know that I have so much more to learn. I plan to continue my education through professional development opportunities, including conferences, trainings, and workshops. In the near future, I hope to be hired as an adult services librarian in San Francisco, where I live. In the long run, I would love to work at a literary or historical archive. My time as an intern at the San Francisco History Center has taught me how fascinating and rewarding archival work can be.
